THE IMPORTANCE OF DREAMS

1. Read the following poem by Langston Hughes.

Hold fast to dreams
For if dreams die
Life is a broken-winged bird
That cannot fly.

Hold fasdt to dreams
For when dreams go
Life is a barren field
Frozen with snow.

2. Identify the ideas expressed in the poem about the importance of dreams and write a small essay about the possible immigrants' expectations when they leave their homeland to a foreign country.

Life is full of dreams.
Dreams give us the willpower to continue the fight against the cons of life. Without dreams, we are just beings to walk on earth.
Although our fantasies do not come to take place, we hope that one day it happens. So we dream.
We build small or large goals in mind, and we are happy, even for brief moments during the dream, wandering and pacing in the ideal images that we build-in our heads throughout our lives.
Dreaming is the basis of life.

The ideas expressed in the poem are that we have to grab our dreams because they are uncertain, vague and temporary, they can disappear easily. If we let our dreams go away we can regret for the whole life and we can not be happy. The author compares our life as a bird: compares a unaccomplished person's life with a broken-winged bird that cannot fly, therefore it can't be happy. He says also that if we don't go after our dreams our life will be meaningless and stagnant.
The poetic subject advice us to hold dreams because they are an important thing in our life, they are like the machine that makes us want to live and have pleasure on doing it.
I think, when immigrants go to a foreign country, they go full of expectations, dreams and hope, waiting for a better future. Someone has to have pretty good reasons and expectations to leave his/her homeland to go to an unknown place where everything's different and harder. I admire the strength of immigrants. It's a huge step on our lives living in a completely different culture and people, far far away from our family and friends, our beloved ones.

The poem said to us to keep save our dreams because dreams can disappear and a life without dreams isn't a real life.
We should have goals and work to achieve those goals because we need to improve so we can turn a better person.
Our life came static and frozen (like the poem said) if we don't have goals or any dreams because we don't have anything to push ourself up. If it happens we have a spiritual poverty, we only conform with what we have at the moment and give up.. we are weak because we don't fight for what we really want.
Usually people immigrate to find a better life: having better conditions, more rights and to earn more money.
Sometimes immigrants have a high expectation and living in a foreign country isn't always pretty because there are difficulties too and we need to have some lucky to find a nice place and a nice job.
We should be conscious in our choices and have in mind our dreams.

The poem tell us that we should grab our dreams, otherwise they will escape because they are just temporary and they just “survive” if we really believe in them and if we can make them real.
Dreams are an easy way to live and they represent an energy source for everybody because they are the only thing that we can grasp in every moment. As such, we shouldn’t let them run away because if that happen we will feel empty inside. The poem says that if this happen we will feel like a bird that cannot fly. Fly is the most important thing for a bird, because a bird that cannot fly isn’t a real bird, isn’t a happy animal. And a person can’t live without dreams, because someone without dreams isn’t happy and doesn’t feel fulfilled.
When an immigrant leaves his homeland he dreams with a better life, with better conditions of living and with more happiness because these are the only reasons that can justify the leaving of a homeland. But, sometimes, immigrants can’t realize all these wish and they see all their dreams running away from them. I think that these people have to have lots of courage to do something like this, because isn’t anyone that abandons his own land to travel in search of a better life, a new life.
